Betreff: INVITATION: Inaugural ECOSOC Presidential Lecture -
Professor Steven Pinker (20 May 2019)
Dear Grand Prior, The President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC) is organizing the Inaugural Presidential Lecture Series on 20 May 2019 (See attached flyer and kindly register to attend on by 16 May 2019 at 12 pm) . The first guest will be Steven Pinker, a psychologist, Harvard professor and a renowned author from Canada. His latest book, published in February 2018, is called “Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress. In his book, Professor Pinker uses data to demonstrate that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge and happiness are on the rise. And that this progress is because of ideals, such as reason, science and humanism. He acknowledges that much suffering remains and that we need these ideals to confront today’s problems and to continue progress. He argues that how things turn out in the future depends on what we do now. The lecture is intended to stimulate the thinking of the UN Community as it is preparing for the July HLPF and the SDG Summit in September, as well as other high-level events. We look forward to seeing you there. Thanks a lot. Regards.
